A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Latin America is blessed with fertile and expansive land in various different climates and altitudes, yet most of this is owned by large private corporations. Because I was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala I know this problem all to well.
I’m running a fundraising campaign so I can learn how people in Brazil are doing something about this.
For the past four years I have studied Latin American political and social issues and now have an amazing opportunity through Bishop’s University of learning how a social movement in Brazil is helping the poor overcome this issue of not having a place to call home.
This May I have have the privilege of travelling to Brazil to study a large social movement in Brazil known as The Landless Workers Movement (MST-Movimento Sem Terra).
The MST movement helps some of the most poor and marginalized people in Brazil to occupy under-used property, notably of wealthy landowners, with the hope of living a decent life and building cooperative farming communities.
WHAT I WILL BE DOING
I will live with families on MST agricultural settlements and on the MST’s National School, will visit the Latin-American School for Agroecology as well as meet with members of the MST leadership, other Brazilian social movements, labour unions, civil society organizations and political parties. I will then engage in and present my own research. I will be devoting my personal blog to documenting my daily interactions with those people who I meet with.
